Museum Kloster Muri

The prologue lets visitors immerse themselves in the exciting history of Muri Abbey in a playful staging. In the abbot’s cellar, visitors learn more about the monastery’s eventful history, with its periods of prosperity and crisis, in display cases, on screens and at listening stations. Pictures of the numerous estates, castles and official courts bear witness to the economic success. In another museum room – formally modeled on the octagon of the church – life in the monastery is presented: Praying, working and reading characterized the everyday life of the monks.

Museum Caspar Wolf

The Caspar Wolf Museum vividly conveys the eventful career of this simple man from Muri as well as the extraordinary development of his artistic work. It pays tribute to the pioneer of Alpine painting Caspar Wolf (1735-1783) with a specially designed exhibition – the most comprehensive permanent presentation of his work ever – and with changing cabinet exhibitions on various aspects related to Caspar Wolf, his art, his time and his themes.

Singisen Forum

The Singisen Forum invites visitors to delve into various themes of the Murian museums through temporary exhibitions and experience a lively connection between history and our current present. There are also encounters with contemporary artists of the Freiamt region and beyond.

Museum of medical history books Muri

The Museum of Medical History Books Muri presents selected works from the collection of Dr. Franz Käppeli. The broad spectrum of books on display (1480 to 1800) ranges from natural history encyclopedias to herbal books and medical literature. The interactive touchscreens allow each visitor to actively browse through the works and make their own discoveries, regardless of their prior knowledge. Recipes for the production of herbal remedies and instructions for surgical procedures are just as much a part of the natural knowledge of the time as unicorns or dragons. The exhibition provides a realistic insight into the culture and thinking of earlier centuries.
