Heiden is situated between Lake Constance and the Säntis, one of 20 communities in the canton Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The impressive location which offers view over the Lake Constance as well as over the hilly landscape of Appenzell inspires vacationers for years.
Heiden attracts guests with a diverse offer of sports, leisure, culture as well as health tourism and relaxation.
It makes an excellent starting point for walks to various different attractions. Appenzell Demonstration Cheese Dairy
A very special cheese experience:
An adventure for the senses in a congenial traditional setting: at the Appenzell Demonstration Cheese Dairy you can watch from the visitors’ gallery as the famous Appenzeller® cheese is made. With the iPad tour you can follow the whole process, from cheese-making to storage in the impressive cheese cellar with up to 12,500 wheels of cheese. Groups can book a one-hour guided tour or other group events. The film at the cheese cinema provides additional information in a number of languages. Enjoy refined cheese dishes and regional specialties at the cosy, rustic restaurant. On Sundays between 9 and 11 a.m. it offers a tasty breakfast buffet. At the shop, you will find the various sorts of aromatic Appenzeller® cheese along with a large selection of regional specialties, gifts and souvenirs. Open 364 days a year.
Henry Dunant museum
The Museum in Heiden is dedicated to life and work of Henry Dunant (1828 – 1910) the founder of the Red Cross. Beside his political ideas and his commitment to humanity you can follow his last years in this region of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.
As well as enjoying videos about his life in our multimedia room, you can join one of our guided tours, where your personal questions will be answered.
