City: Bellinzona
General Information
The village of Monte Carasso was recorded as having a population of 2,907 in 2016, is located near the town of Bellinzona, Canton of Ticino, in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, just south of the Alps. Since 2017, Monte Carasso has joined many other villages in becoming part of the agglomeration of the town of Bellinzona, which is the capital of the Canton of Ticino and the district of the same name. Bellinzona has 42,084 inhabitants (as of 2017), while the district as a whole has more than 50,000 inhabitants.
From the south, Monte Carasso is described as the “key to the alps,” while from the north, the village is known as the “gateway to Italy.” Bellinzona offers visitors and its own residents a rich historical and geographic medieval heritage. Its narrow streets, its squares and courtyards and its old houses are evidence of this. Bellinzona also has three famous castles, which speak of a centuries-old history influenced by the Romans, Langobards, Swiss, and Milanese.This rich heritage exists in perfect harmony with modern architectural creations of the renowned Ticino school.

You can access the starting point of the north-south freeway, which leads to the alpine passes of Gotthard, Lukmanier, San Bernardino, and Nufenen, as well as the Gotthard Road Tunnel. The Gotthard Base Tunnel was opened on June 1, 2016 and is the longest railway tunnel in the world.
